Prostate cancer put a shadow over my Dad's eyes just after he retired at 60. By the time it was detected it was incurable. At first, other than monthly hospital visits, it didn't impact too much on his quality of life. Dad grasped every opportunity to fight the disease and made sure he kept as fit and healthy as he could, come rain or shine he would walk miles everyday or swim. He astounded doctors with his determination and was a real inspiration to the rest of the family. Sadly in July this year, eight years after diagnosis, the pendulum began to swing in the diseases favour. Dads courage and determination never wavered as he continued with new treatment options. In December 2016, 4 days after Christmas, he lost his fight. Right up to the last, Dad fought, he wanted more time, he wasn't finished. And for us, at 68, it was too soon like so many others, to go. For all reading this, during my Dad's eight year battle, new therapies and treatments became available, new research gave hope, some too late to help Dad, but others like radium 223 told us the doctors hadn't given up yet. So we must continue to invest in treatment to stop prostate cancer taking too many too soon - but also money isn't the only answer, please take time to speak to your Dad, your brothers, husband and sons, talk to them about prostate cancer, encourage them to get tested - I wish I had xx
